The purpose

Why the work mattered

The calciner was the heart of Calix's technology. Its value depended on the whole operation around it: safe commissioning, dependable powder handling, energy recovery, product quality and a team capable of running it every day.

The challenge

Define the real constraint

Commissioning joined several difficult systems: the furnace, calciner, filtration, heat recovery and powder handling plant. Michael led design reviews, HAZOP work and practical optimisation across each interface. Better particle handling and recuperative heat exchange improved reliability and energy efficiency.

The work

Turn intent into delivery

A successful test was not enough. Customers needed consistent products and dependable delivery. Michael built the production controls, safety procedures, training and quality system that moved the site from early scale-up to routine commercial supply.

From idea to impact

Make the change endure

The plant became a platform for products across magnesium and mineral processing markets. Commercial growth rested on the less visible work behind the technology: quality assurance, production planning, logistics and operating discipline.

Perspective

Why this project matters

A new technology earns its place only when people can work with it safely and go home unharmed. Zero lost-time injuries through commissioning and scale-up mattered more than any commercial milestone, because the duty of care owed to a team is not traded against schedule or cost. The same principle extends outward: customers who depend on the product, and a business built to last, both rest on the discipline of doing it properly the first time.
